ADDRESS BY D. G. BARTON The speaker al the Marton Rotary Club on Monday night was Captain David Barton, who gave a most instructive address on the London Money Market. The speaker’s knowledge of banking, discount and clearing organisations and how the London money market was controlled by the Bank of England was an eye-opener to the members. Captain Barton was a member of the staff of the Bank of New South Wales at Wanganui prior to his departure overseas, nearly five years ago. Most of that period he was a prisoner of war, during which time he studied banking, and on his arrival in London he was successful in passing his examination in banking at The Associated Institute of Bankers and there joined the staff of the Bank of New South Wales in London, being a member of the staff for about six months, which gave him a splendid opportunity of studying the London money market.

His studies, however, did not prevent him from taking his place in the football field and he played for the Services’ football team m France, London, Wales and Ireland, and was also a member of the Harlequin Football Club, one of the leading clubs at Home, where he upheld the reputation gained in New Zealand as one of our leading Rugby players. In the cricket field at Marton he showed exceptional ability, and represented Wanganui and Rangitikei in representative matches. Rotarian Frank Brice expressed the thanks of the Rotarians to Captain Barton for his most instructive talk and a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.
