APPLICANTS REQUIRED FOR ENLISTMENT IN THE INTERIM AIR FORCE

1. Volunteers are sought for enlistment *in the Interim Air Force for non-flying duties and applications will be considered from the following:— (i) Male members of the R.N.Z.A.F. Reserve, (ii) Members of the Air Training Corps, (iii) • Discharged Naval, Army and Air Force personnel (males only), (iv.): Civilians without previous service experience. 2. AGE: The minimum and maximum ages for enlistment have been provisionally fixed at 18 years and 45 years respectively. Applications may, however, be submitted by youths who have attained the age of 17 years, or by men over 45 years on the understanding that consideration ot such applications will be deferred until after the 31st March, 1946. Youths under the age of 21 years will require to produce the written consent of parents or guardians prior to enlistment. 3. MARITAL STATUS: Enlistment is open to both married . and single men. 4. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: The minimum qualification desired is Proficiency Certificate, but absence of this qualification will not bar acceptance if otherwise suitable.

5. MEDICAL STANDARD: Applicants should be fit for general service, but consideration will be given to men fit for special employment. 6. DUTIES ON ENLISTMENT: The immediate requirement is to provide replacements for serving personnel who desire their release from the R.N.Z.A.F. and successful applicants will require to undertake such duties as are allocated to them in order to achieve this object. Opportunities exist for employment in administrative, technical, semi-skilled and unskilled trades. At a later date applications for trade training will be solicited from members of the Interim Air Force to meet service requirements in the trades concerned. 7. PERIOD OF ENLISTMENT: Applications will be considered for the following periods from the date of commencement of duty, viz., either to: (i) 31st March, 1947, or (ii) 30th September, 1947, or (iii) 31st March, 1948.

N. 8.: “Supplemented" rates are available to married personnel as shown. The member receives either his pay for rank or the supplemented rate according to his marital status whichever is the higher. From out of the sum payable under the supplemented rate the following amounts are paid direct to the member's wjfe, viz., where there are no children, 15/per month; with one or more children 15/6/- per month. In addition to the foregoing allowances, married members are required to make minimum compulsory allotments to their wives, dependent upon the number of children. Living-off allowance is payable at 154/15/- per annum where members obtain permission to live off Station. The above rates are free of Income Tax, National Savings and Social Security contributions. In the event of the new rates ot pay to be introduced from Ist April, 1947, involving any member in a loss of pay, he will have the right to Immediate discharge notwithstanding that the term of his engagement in the Interim Air Force has not then expired. 10. LEAVE PRIVILEGES: Leave will be granted in accordance with current provisions, W/O's and N.C.O.’s being granted 21 days per annum and airmen 18 days per annum. In addition, concessions are made with regard to travelling tim|> whilst on leave and free travel warrants issued to member's home. Various other provisions, exist for the granting of compassionate and confinement leave and sick leave. 11. LOCATION OF SERVICE: Personnel enlisting for the Interim Air Force from civilian sources will not be required to serve overseas, but will be given the opportunity as required of volunteering for service in the Pacific or in the reinforcement squadron with the Occupational Force in Japan. Personnel under the age of 21 years will require the prior written consent of their parents or guardians before acceptance of an application for overseas service. An endeavour will be made to locate personnel on Stations as near to their homes as possible.

The Department undertakes to release personnel on the conclusion of their period of engagement, and subject to the exigencies of the service will grant on application an extension of the original term of engagement for a period not beyond the 31st March, 1948. The Department reserves the right to discharge any personnel prior to the conclusion of the term of engagement whose services prove unsatisfactory. Preference will be given to members of the Interim Air Force when applications are called for service in the Regular Air Force. Any member of the Interim Air Force who is accepted for employment in civil aviation will be released at any time on the request of the proper employing authority. 8. RANK ON ENLISTMENT: All members of the Air Training Corps, civilians and all personnel not previously employed in the R.N.Z.A.F. will be enlisted in the rank of Aircraftman, 2nd Class, Group V, unless by reason of any special skill, including Naval or Army training they can be employed in a higher rank or trade group. Members of the R.N.Z.A.F. Reserve or discharged personnel will be enlisted in such ranks and trades as will best assist the replacement plan. The position will vary according to the position in each trade, and volunteers from ex-serving personnel will be given the opportunity of withdrawing their applications if either the rank or trade offered proves unsatisfactory. 9. RATES OF PAY: The existing rates of pay and allowances will be maintained up until 31st March, 1947, with the exception of gratuities. Personnel now serving in the R.N.Z.A.F. will receive payment of gratuities tip until 31st March, 1946, but in view of the short period involved, it is not proposed to make such payments to personnel entering or re-engaging in the Service between now and 31st March, 1946. Gratuities will be paid as at present to all personnel serving overseas. The following are specimens of rates of pay for the ranks and trades concerned:

12. METHOD OF APPLICATION: Applications for service in the Interim \ir Force will be made as follows: (1) Members of the R.N.Z.A.F. Reserve or Discharged Members: Applicants falling in the above categories are requested to forward their applications to the Air Secretary, Wellington, C. 1., and are required to give the following particulars:— (a) Full name and address. (b) Official number. (c) Rank and trade group held at time of discharge, or posting to the Reserve. (d) Whether married or single and number of children (if any). (e) Present occupation and name of employer. (f) Period prepared to serve from date of commencement of duty, viz., 12 months, 18 months, or up to 31st March, 1948. (g) Preference in regard to locality of service. State first three preferences. (ii) Members of the Air Training Corps: All members of the Air Training Corps are required to make personal application through local unit commanders. > (iii) Personnel not included in Categories (i) and (ii) above:—Applicants are requested to forward their applications to the Air Secretary, Wellington, C. 1., and give the following information: (a) Full name and address. (b) Brief particulars of any previous Naval or Military service including:—■ (1) Official description (number, rank, trade, etc). (ii) Whether discharged or posted to the Reserve. (c) Whether married or single and number of children (if any). (d) Present occupation and name of employer. (e) Period prepared to serve, viz 12 months, 18 months or up to 31st March, 1948. (f) Preference in regard to locality of service. State first three preferences.
