SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. T. Russell and her son, L/Cpl. S. T. Russell, who recently returned from overseas, are Wanganui visitors to Dunedin. Mrs. J. L. Pearce, Wellington, has been visiting Wanganui as the guest of her sister, Mrs. C. R. White, College Street. Mrs. A. McPhail, Wanganui, is visiting Wellington to attend the provincial W.D.F.U. meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Crammond left Wanganui this week for Australia, where they will reside in future. Mrs. Crammond, an English war bride, arrived in New Zealand recently and last Thursday was guest of honour at an evening given by Mrs. T. Russell, Calus Avenue. HITHER AND THITHER Pre-Wedding Parties Miss Marie Burgess, whose marriage takes place next Saturday, has been the recipient of two most enjoyable parties when she received many useful and varied gifts. Last Saturday, Mesdames E. R. Wills, G. Langslow, and W. Hastings were hostesses at a kitchen evening at. the home of Mrs. Wilis, Wanganui East. Musical items and competitions were held. On Monday, Miss Burgess visited Wellington, where she was the guest at a gift evening held at. her sister’s flat in Hobson Street. The hostesses were Miss Betty Burgess and Miss Jean Mouat, and a pleasant time was spent playing games and competitions. Surprise Gift Evening Mrs. Alan Fraser, Alma Road, Gonville, was recently hostess at a surprise gift evening for Miss Kath Cowen, whose marriage takes place later in the month. Members of the Y.W.C.A. choir, of which the bride-to-be is a member, were among'the guests. Miss E. Cowen assisted the hostess to provide a novel programme. The guest of honour received many useful gifts for her future home in Tauranga.

WESTBOURNE. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE GARDENING CIRCLE Mrs. J. Burns, convener of the West- : bourne Women's Gardening Circle, presided at the March meeting, whicn was held at the home of Mrs. Stephens. The bring-and-buy stall was In charge of Mrs. E. Baker and was quickly sold out. The hospital box competition, judged by Mrs. Stephens and Mrs. Stilborn, resulted: Mrs. Burns 1, Mrs. Uttley 2, Mrs. Armstrong 3. These boxes were sent to sick members. The points prizes for the year were: Mrs. Burns 1, Mrs. F. Lee 2, Mrs. Uttley 3. The annual meeting of the circle followed the monthly meeting, when the annual report, read by the secretary, Mrs. Swan, revealed that the (circle had sent six parcels to members’ (relatives overseas, and a donation was I given to the institute sewing circle. The sick members at home or in hosloital were visited and received flowers. Mrs. J. Burns was re-elected (un- | opposed) convener for 1946 and the I secretary, Mrs. Swan, was also re--elected (unopposed). | The convener thanked members for i their co-operation and support. 1 The talk on bulb culture was given by Mrs. Burns.
