TAKANINI TRY-OUTS HORSES ENGAGED AT ELLERSLIE A three-year-old, Steppeland, was responsible for a nice effort at Takanini on Tuesday morning when he defeated Foxlore rather comfortably over a mile in 1.44 4-5. Steppeland has been regarded rather highly in the past, and, although his form on the race track has not been good, he appears to have a royal chance of making amends in the Buckland Handicap at the Auckland Club’s meeting a. Ellerslie on Saturday. All the galloping was executed on the grass track next to the rails, lhe poles being out 6ft. and the going .in first-class order. King’s Pride and Beau Dink were sent a mile, covering the first half in 51 3-ssec,-and the full distance in 1.47 3-5. As indicated by tfTe time, neither i»rse was allowed to fully stretch out.

Gay Lally was restricted to two rounds njf pace-work on the plough. His condition cannot be faulted, and he should be prominent in the decision of the Bledisloe Handicap at the week-end. Bycroft’s mile required 1.46, his fastest section being the last half-mile, which was traversed in 52 2-ssec. Black Ace covered seven furlongs on the plough in 1.30. He has been working with rare dash, but in view of his past failures cannot be recommended with any degree of confidence.

Sir Bian and Honora got to the end of six furlongs in 1.16. The former left yesterday for New Plymouth and will be ridden in the Taranaki Cup on Saturday by J. Williamson. Honora raced badly at Te Rapa last Saturday, but hit out very jfreely in this gallop as a result of the easy of the track. Balmacara was associated with Park Royal over six furlongs in 1.17, the first three being traversed in 38sec. Both horses carried welter-weights, and Balmacara’s effort left the impression that he may be just about back to his best again. He will be ridden in the Salisbury Handicap on Saturday by G. Cameron. The surprise o£ the morning was the five furlongs effort recorded by the novice Te Hinewai, who worked attractively to clock 1.1. She is not engaged at the Auckland meeting, out may race at Paeroa next week. Majesty had the assistance of Regal March in his gallop over five, and neither horse was off the bit as they completed the task in 1.3. Majesty is a warm favourite for the Ascot Handicap. Beau le Harve was defeated byLord Phrosa in 1.3 1-5, but the latter carried a light weight. Knight Templar, carrying under 7.0, was better than Gay Joy in a similar time.

Altess and Old Scot recorded 1.3, the former revealing improvement to shade his companion on the post. Landveyor registered 1.5, while Sweet Biscuit and My Bonnie were not allowed io do better than 1.5 3-5. Cambria snd Royal Merit were sent half a mile, but were timed only over the last three, which took 38 3-ssec; Revolte registered 40sec; Iwo .lima, •11 3-ssec; and Jovial Song completed the last three of six in 37 4-ssec; Richelieu and Dink's Song covered half a mile in 51 l-3sec. i AUCKLAND TRIALS ! ON ELLERSLIE TRACKS [ Track gallops livened- up a bit at Ellerslie on Tuesday morning, when the No. 1 grass course, provided excellent going after the recent rain. Duke Royal, Superb and Kindroon performed impressively, and the lastnamed, who has two engagements on Saturday, is in excellent condition to extend his successful record. The star item was credited to Duke Royal and Superb, lhe pair being in front of Killfast at the conclusion oi six furlongs run in 1.16 3-5. They ran the first three furlongs in 38s, and the first-named pair came home well. Killlast was up with them half a furlong Irom the finish, when his saddle slipped back and he had to be eased up. Ina similar task Kindroon was holding Bay Jim over the final stages, after running the distance in 1.17 2-5, the ’first three furlongs taking 37 3-ssec.

Nawab, Tu Maro and Fight On were also sent six furlongs and took 1.18 2-5, the first two furlongs taking 26sec. There was little between Nawab and Tu Maro at the finish, but Fight On was several lengths back. Beau Volo came home from the sixfurlong post, in 1.18. He went very evenly all the way and was not undulybustled. Gay Star ran an easy six furlongs which tool; 1.23. Commissar impressed more than Saladam throughout five furlongs which occupied 1.5, the last three taking 39sec.

The two-year-old Eastern Charm and Broiealice reeled off half a mile in 51 3-ssec. Gwen Vaals and Miss Shipley shaped well for novices by running four furlongs in 50 3-ssec., and Coogee look 51 2-ssec. Inkspot, also did a similar task in 51sec. This filly is making good progress. Sir Desmond and Brockton sprinted three furlongs in 39sec., doing it well. Vermeer, going comfortably, traversed a mile in 1.49 3-5. On ti e tan, Gl-azipur ran the last six furlongs of a round in 1.26 4-5, while Colonel Dink completed Ihe last seven furlongs of his work on the sand [in 1.35 2-5. On lhe same track Inn - !\ation strode over six furlongs in 1.26. The hurdle horseman, J. Chaplin, [will attend the Taranaki meeting, where he has been engaged to ride Shepherd's Mate in hurdle events. W. Bagby will also go down to the same meeting. AWAPUNI TRACKS TRENTHAM CANDIDATES WORK The rain which fell during the week-end and the early hours of Tuesday morning has proved of great benefit to the tracks at Awapuni, and they are now in excellent order, although the plough circuit was too sloppy to be used this morning. The course proper, with the pegs 30ft. out, was used for the galloping and it was easy. A number of horses with engagements at. the Trentham and.
