1947 Band Contest.

Wanganui is to seek to have the N.Z. Championship Brass Bands’ Contest for 1947 held here, and a public meeting to support this move will be held in the City Counc 1 Chambers this afternoon at 4.15. A gurantee of £5O has to go forward with the application to the N.Z. Bands’ Association, and backing for this’ will be sought at the meeting to’day. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. E. W. Merewether, will preside. Growing in Strength During the last quarter 30 new members joined the Wanganui branch of the Homeservicemen’s Association, and the total membership for the Dominion is now in excess of 30,000, the branch president, Mr. A. Tong, stated at the quarterly general meeting and reunion held this week. The following programme was presented, with Mr. F. Wilkie acting as master of ceremonies: Messrs. A. Brown and J. D. Tizard songs; Mr. F. Wilkie, comedy numbers, and D. Cavell and partner, niano-accordion duets. This was followed by the screening of films loaned by Mr.’ E. A. Millward and projected by Mr. G. Alward. Community singing to the accompaniment of Mr. Burigess concluded the evening's programme.
