WANGANUI TRAMWAYS
FIRST STAGE OF CHANGEOVER LOAN AUTHORITY SOUGHT The first step toward replacing the existing tramway system in Wanganui with trolley and petrol buses will be taken by the City Council in the near future, when the authority of the Local Government Loans Board will be sought for borrowing a sum of £130,000. This is the estimated amount required for the purchase of the new vehicles and all equipment and appliances required. The security for the loan will be a special rate of 2.315 d in the £ on -the rateable unimproved value of all rateable property in the city.
The principle of replacing the tramway system with trolley and petrol buses was endorsed by the Citv Council at its February meeting, following special consideration of a detailed renort and recommendations submitted by the engineer and manager, Mr. L. F. Row.
The council has now notified the nublic that at its monthly meeting on March 19 it will consider a motion to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to raise the required loan.
If the Local Government Loans Board is satisfied in every particular, it will authorise the council to take a noli of ratepayers on the proposal. The scheme set out in Mr. Row’s report, however, involves a change-over in five main stages spread over a period of approximately five years. The council has already emphasised that it will not be necessary to raise the whole of the loan of £130.900 in th” first year. The money will be raised only as required.
