TRAINED FOUR WINNERS AT MARTON

W. J. McDOWELL’S FEAT SUCCESSFUL JOCKEYS Thj distinction of turning out four winners at the three-day Marton meeting fell to W. J. McDowell, formeily a well-known hurdle rider, who new has an establishment at Marton Junction. Included in his record at the-meeting, where he topped the list of winning trainers, was the feat oi providing the winner of the maiden event on ail three days. McDowell had four representatives in the Maiden Race on the opening day and won with New Deer at double-figure odds. On the second day two of the runners in the Trial Plate were from his stable anti he won with Imperial, who was the “win” favourite. The sequence was competed on Saturday, when Po Marama. one of two starters from his stable, won the Novice Stakes. McDowell’s other winner at the meeting was the Waverley-owned Severity, who carried off the honours in the Rangitikei Hack Cup on the second day of the fixture.

The Awapuni stable of C. Thomson and A. McGregor’s Te Rapa stable each had three winners at the meeting. Thomson had t.he distinction of winning the principal event on the opening day, the Marton Cup, with Saludos. and the main race on the second day, the Aidworth Stakes, with Langue d’Or. In addition, he trains Arco, winner of the New Year Hack Handicap on the first day. McGregor notched a win with Baby Girl in the Apprentices’ Hack on the second day of the meeting, and on the final day won a “double" with Fortune's Smile in the Crofton Handicap and Baby Girl in the Railway Handicap. A. W. McDonald, of Awapuni, turned out Argumentative, winner of the two-year-old races on the first anti second days of the meeting, and E. C. Baker, of Otaki, scored wins with Merger in the hurdle races on the corresponding days. Mr. T. A. Baikie, of Te Puke, owns and trains Jovial Hour, winner of two hack races on the same days.

Most successful jockey at the meeting was W. J. Stevens, now en route for India, who was on five winners, these being New Deer, Alright, Arco and Jovial Hour ttwice), W. L. Aitker. piloted three winners at the meeting, being on Yandra, Po Marama am. Specialist, and A. G. Waddell won on Argumentative (twice) and Imperial. E. C. Baker was associated with Merger in his two hurdle wins. V. J. Sellar.'- rode Saludos and Langue d’Or in their two successes. W. Hardman was on Peter Robinson and Severityin their wins. G. Hughes scored on Fortune’s Smile and Baby Girl, and K. Chote was on Kilarney Boy and Lily Ann.

Single winning rides were registered by W. Connor (Young Margaret), R. Harding (Baby Girl), W. Jenkins (Gold Claim), G. R. Tattersall (Superium) and R. B. Ireland (Furioso). E. C. Baker added two more wins to his training record when he turned out Merger and Voltaire for the Rangitikei meeting at Bulls on the intervening Saturday. Mr. T. A. Baikie < Jovial Hour) and A. McGregor (Baby Girl) also added to their records as did G. S. Rayner (Michael) Single successes at Bulls came the wav of N. Cunninghame, of Takanini (Fiorin), G. W. New, Awapuni (Broiefield), H. Griffith, Awapuni (Tula) and W. J. Hastie, Feilding (Gold Shoes). W. J. Stevens (Jovial Hour), V. J. Sellars (Tula), G. Hughes (Fiorin), E. C. Baker (Merger), J. Kendall (Michael). N. B. Holland (Brolefield), L. J Clutterbuck (Voltaire), R. Brown (Baby Girl) and W. L. Aitken (Gold Shoes) equally shared the riding honours at Bulls. In the seven days’ racing at Awapi.'iu, Marton and Bulls, Stevens rode eight winners, Sellars seven, Aitken five. Baker three. Clutterbuck three, Hughes three and Tattersall four.
