DEATH OF KIDNAPPED AMERICAN CHILD
TWO PEOPLE DETAINED Recd. 8 p-m. New York, Jan. 8. The Chicago police announce that they have detained a 65-year-old janitor and his wife, after detectives had located them in a basement in which the body of Suzanne Degnan was dismembered. The basement was directly behind the drainage catch basin in which the child’s head was found, and less than a block from the Degnan home. The police also discovered a new, cleaned hacksaw, which they are confindent was used for the dismemberment.
The police found a blood-stained axe in the basement of another building which the janitor looked after. The janitor aided the police in a hunt for clues, pointing out manholes as detectives combed the neighbourhood. The janitor was cordial to reporters during the police search, permitting them to use his telephone and listening impassively as they dictated their accounts.
