SAFE AND MONEY STOLEN

£B3O IN NOTES AND SILVER REMOVED FROM CHINESE PREMISES IN AUCKLAND (P.A.) Auckland, Jan. 9. A small steel safe containing about £B3O in notes and silver, and cheques to a value of about £BO. was stolen from Chinese premises at Grey’s Avenue early this morning. The safe is believed to have been carried out. of the front door, which opens on to the street, and loaded on io the back of a motor truck, while several Chinese were asleep in the building. The premises, wnich at one lime were used as a shop, are next door to the Chungking Cale, and a pathway, with a wooden gate at its entrance, runs between the two buildings. It is thought the thieves earned a stepladder from the back of the restaurant and used it to enter an unlocked 'side window in the buildings, about ten feet above lhe pathway. They then entered a room on the ground floor and removed the safe, which was locked and was standing on the floor. They then took it through the front door, which could be unlocked from the inside, and placed on a vehicle. All of the money, with the exception of about £lOO, was the property of Mr. Guy On, and the remainder belonged to another Chinese, Mr. Lee Chong.
