DR. GEORGINA SWEET

DEATH IN iMELBOUKNE The death occurred recently in Melbourne of Dr. Georgina Sweet, wellknown to many New Zealand women for her Keen interest in the PanPacPic Women’s Association, of which she was a past president. Dr. Sweet visited New Zealand after she attended the Pan-Pacific cornierence held in Vancouver in 1937 and addressed a number of women’s organisations. Dr. Sweet had a distinguishd academic career. She was the woman to obtain a doctorate in science al the Melbourne University and lhe first woman in her own right to be elected to the University Council. She was associated with the University as undergraduate, graduate and lecturer. At one time she was associate professor and acting Professor of Zoology and lecturer in Pavisitology, Dr. Sweet did extensive research work and was a member of the Australian Research Council. Among her many researchers were investigations lor the Federal Government on the relation of blood-sucking flies to disease. She made two trips abroad for the Government.

In addition to her scientific work Dr. Sweet took a keen interest in international affairs. She was a past president of the Pan-Pacilic Womens Association. She founded the PanPaciiic Women’s Committee and the Australian Joint Standing Committee of the Women's Major Federal Organisation with international affiliation. She was also a member of the Executive Bureau of international Affairs, Melbourne, and of the executive of the League ot National Union. Dr. Sweet was in close touch with the League of Nations at Geneva, being a member of the International Committee of Intellectual Co-opera-tion. she attended the Conference of the International Federation ol University Women al Krakov. A vice-president of the world Y.W.C.A. board, and a president for seven years of lhe Australian board, she sent, at her own expense, younger members of the Y.W.C.A. abroad for conferences.

Dr. Sweet was in her 71st year, and although she had been ill for some time, a few days before her death she was dealing with a constitution tor the Pan-Pacific Women’s Association.
