N.Z. VOLUNTEERS FOR INDIA AND CHINA
INTERESTING PASSENGERS ON EMPIRE HAIG (P.A.)' Wellington, Jan. 7. The motor-vessel Empire Haig left Wellington to-day for Calcutta with an interesting passenger list of 25. It included volunteer workers for the Y.W.C.A. in India and The Friends’ Ambulance Unit in China, and two jockeys who were in charge of a shipment of racehorses for the Maharajah of Kashmir, and other owners In India. A large amount of the ship’s caigo was war equipment from the Army and Air Force no longer required in the Dominion.
Four New Zealanders who left as reinforcements for the Friends’ Ambulance Unit in China were: Doctor D. J. Clifford, and Mr. W. R. Lucas, both of Dunedin, and Dr. Thurlow Thompson and Mrs. Thompson, of Christchurch. Mrs. Thompson Is a trained physiotherapist. Like the seven recruits who left in May of last year, these workers are giving purely voluntary service, for at least two years, as members of the unit, which has already received high commendation by Chinese and American leaders in China few; its services to soldiers and civilians alike in wartime. All wear the Army uniform, with Red Cross shoulder flashes and hat badges. "
