RAGLAN ELECTORATE

NOMINATION OF CANDIDATES Hamilton, Jan. 4 Considerable discussion has arisen in the Raglan and Waikato districts as to whether or not a by-election would be held to fill the vacancy caused by Ihe death of Mr. Robert Coulter, M.P. for Raglan, in view of the general election later in the year, says the "New Zealand Herald” correspondent. Indications are that a byelection will be held, and these are borne out by the fact that the National Party is calling for nominations of candidates for a selection ballot. These are to be lodged by 5 p.m. next Friday. No public move has been made by the Labour Party to appoint a candidate to succeed Mr. Coulter, but it is understood that the matter is being considered at headquarters in Wellington and that an announcement might not be long delayed.

In the 1943 general elections, the result in the Raglan electorate was as follows: —R. Coulter (Labour), 4817; R. J. Glasgow (National), 4709; A. Dillon (Democratic Labour), 289; S. Burton (Real Democratic Movement i, 221.; infoimal, 90. Majority for Coulter. 108.
