THE FINAL GALLOPS

ELERSLIE TRACK WORK

Auckland, Dec. 24. Golden Souvenir wound up his Auckland Cup trials at Ellerslie this morning with a final gallop which confirmed his claim to solid favouritism for the big two?mile race on Boxing Day. The evergreen Lou Rosa went out looking a figure of fitness and has apparently recovered from his mishap at Te Rapa. His half-brother, Mr. Rosa, impressed as having done everything the light way of late. Golden Souvenir (L. J. Ellis), Chung Chong (R. Gibbs), Expanse (H. N. Wiggins), and Mr. Rosa (W. Winder; were associated in the star gallop of the morning over a round. Expanse had the outside running, but soon went to the front from Mr. Rosa and Golden Souvenir, with Chung Chong behind them. Five furlongs from home Chung Chong went up to join them, and they were in a fairly good line as they straightened up. Golden Souvenir had worked to the outside, and soon had the measure of his companions, but was immediately eased a little. Passing the post Mr. Rosa, who was running on strongly, was a shade in front of Chung Chong and Golden Souvenir Expanse being about a length further away. The round occupied 2.9 3-5, the last six furlongs in 1.19 2-5, the last seven in 1.30, and the final three in 39 2-ssec. FASTEST CUP GALLOP.

Actually the fastest time recorded by a Cup horse for a round was the 2.8 3-5 returned by Palfrey (D. Thistoll), who had a length advantage over Miss Medley (Jillings), the last seven furlongs taking 1.33 and the last, six in 1.20 3-5. Miss Medley, a sluggish worker, had to be kept at it. Lou Rosa (McKay) was associated with Longsword (Broughton) over a round, and Lou Rosa led throughout to complete the distance in 2.11 2-5, time which both could have improved. The last seven furlongs took 1.33. Corot was galloping freely clear of Cowper over a circuit in 2.9 the last six furlongs in 1.24. Glenfalloch was let off with an easy three furlongs in 40 2-ssec. Rakanui was on the tan and was never at top in clocking 1.52 3-5 for a round, the last seven furlongs in 1.35 1-5. Gay Chat returned 1.49 L Our Gold was partnered by British Talent, also on the tan, over seven furlongs which occuoied 1.31 1-5. Though Lord Luck returned the fastest time of the Railway Handicap candidates for five furlongs in the final gallops at Ellerslie this morning, two horses who impressed more were Tuis and Deprive. No sprinter has \ynrked better on the track during the past week than Deprive, who won on the course last Christmas as a two-year-old. Thponhilus, the ruling favourite for the Railway Handicap, has not had a serious gallon since arriving at Ellerslie. This mornin o, he dashed over three furlongs in 37 3-ssec, and was hitting out extra well. Lately he has been reported to be showing sli>ht tenderness, but there was no sign of it in his work this morning. SPRINT CANDIDATES. Tuis just headed the Christmas Handicap candidate Riverview over eix

furlongs in 1.18 1-5 after covering the first three in 42 3-ssec, but she was travelling with consummate ease at the finish. This horse has worked well since coming north. Deprive drew attention to his prospects as a dangerous lightweight in the Railway Handicap by being a shade in front of Reorapa and going exceptionally well in 1.4 4-5 for five furlongs. They ran the first two in 25sec. However no fault can be found with Reorapa, who is a better horse at present than when taken south recently for the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap. Kentish ran his usual smart halfmile in 50 2-ssec. Verdant, after clocking 11 3-ssec. for the first furlong, encompassed the distance in 51 sec. Lord Luck hit out splendidly to get to the end of five furlongs in the good time of 1.3 2-5, the best of the morning for the distance. He ran the last three furlongs in 39sec. Black Beret was not asked for more than a brief sprint down the straight. Flowerburn did an excellent six furlongs in 1.18 2-5 with Good Bay. after , running the first three in 38 l-ssec. Flowerburn has gone on the right way since last raced.*
