DEATH OF ROY BERRY

WELL-KNOWN JOCKEY AND TROTTING TRAINER

(P.A.) Christchurch, Dec. 23 The death occurred at Christchurch on Saturday, after a protracted illness, of R. B. Berry, well-known lightweight jockey in the years before the Great War and later a trotting trainer. Berry rode Sinapis to win the New Zealand Cup and twice drove Lucky Jack to win the Trotting Cup, besides training Bronze Eagle, last year's winner. Other gallopers he rode included Stardancer (dead-heat with Bon Reve in the Stewards’ Handicap), Sinapis (Wanganui Cup), Marsa (McLean Stakes), Ladoga {Thompson Handicap). In trotting he had great success with Pacing Power, Horse Power, Parisienne, Bronze Eagle, Springfield Globe, Trampfast and many other first-class pacers and trotters. Berry is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter.
