TYPHOON TO REAPPEAR AT WOODVILLE

EKETAHUNA HANDICAP ENGAGEMENT

Since he last raced in New Zealand Typhoon has had a visit to Australia lor the Victorian spring campaign, ana in spite of the fact that he was unable to give of his best he provided plenty of "copy” for sports writers on the other side of the Tasman. Thus it is of much interest to racegoers that the Defoe gelding is to make his reappearance to-morrow at the Pahiatua meeting at Woodville, where he is engaged in the Eketahuna Handicap. As he is being given a special preparation for the Wellington Cup, just four weeks off now, his display in this seven-fur-long event will be watched with keen interest. Typhoon has 9.11 to carry tomorrow, and will be conceding from 171 b to 391 b to his opponents but it is an impost that would not trouble him at his best. However he has had a spell since he returned from Melbourne, having had a few days’ let-up on his owner’s farm, and it may be that he will require the race to sharpen him up for further engagements, which include the Manawatu Cup Boxing Day. In his only race in the dominion this season Typhoon carried 9.3 and won *the Robinson Handicap (seven furlongs) at the Foxton meeting, held at Awapuni on September 22. He was oig in condition then but he was able to sustain a run and catch the pacemaker, Sir Bradbury, within a few strides of the winning post. How he shapes at the Pahiatua meeting remains 1o be seen.

Foxoatcher claims two engagements at the Pahiatua meeting to-morrow, being in the Pahiatua Handicap (a mile and a-quarter) and the Eketahuna Handicap. In the longer race the Defoe mare has 710, but in the sevenfurlong event she has been set to carry 8.8. The Pahiatua Handicap field is not a strong one, and the manner in which she was running on at the end of seven furlongs at Otaki last Saturday suggests that her metier may be found in middle distance events. It is interesting to note that she also claims engagements over seven and ten furlongs at Awapuni on Boxing Day.

A fortnight ago, on the second day of the Woodville meeting, Bay Robe carried 7.3* and finished second to Glenfalloch in the Gothard Handicap. On the same course to-morrow the Robemond gelding is to carry 7.8 In the Paihatua Handicap. Bay Robe was an easy winner of the Spring Novice on Labour Day at Trentham, and where the company is not first class he must be resnected. * ♦ ♦ •

Voltaire, fourth over seven furlongs at Otaki last Saturday in the race won by Saludos. was hitting out freely over the final stages. The Croupier gelding may be better suited over a mile and a-quarter in the Piahatua Handicap to-morrow.

Lady Chips has a good record this season, having been impressive in two wins and a second in hack company. On the minimulfi in the Pahiatua Handicap to-morrow, she should be well placed to extend her record in the higher company she has reached. Dileas disappointed his supporters when taken to Riccarton last month, but the Awapuni-trained Dink gelding may be better suited in the Eketahuna Handicap at Woodville to-morrow if he has not taken any ill-effects from his southern journey. Tid-Apa, surprise winner of the Te Horo Hack at Otaki ast Saturday in her second appearance on the day, is down to contest the mile and aquarter Rodney Hack at the Pahiatua meeting to-morrow. The Wheriko mare was finishing on to gain the decision at Otaki, and there is reason to expect that the extra furlong will not trouble her.

One of ’ Auckland’s leading lightweights, the apprentice G. Hughes will sandwich the second day of the Taranaki meeting in between the first two days of the Ellerslie fixture. At the Auckland meeting he will be on Landveyor in the Cup and Beau le Harve in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and he is likely to have the mount on Theophilus in the Railway Handicap.

W. J. Broughton's services will be in demand at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. He is to ride Longsword (Cup), Reorapa (Railway Handicap), Yusuf, Karachi and Ruling Master. Broughton will probably come down to ride at the second day of the Manawatu meeting, return for the second day at Ellerslie (Friday next), and then come back to Awapuni for the concluding day there. Apparently he will do a “spot” of race riding in between his train journeys.
