AUSTRALIAN ARMY
NEW APPOINTMENTS Canberra. Dec. 19. Lieut-General V. A. H. Sturdee has been appointed Chief of the General Staff and Major-General S. F. Rowell vice chief. The Prime Minister, Mr. Chifley, announced the appointments to-day following a recent decision to reconstitute the Military Board in place ot the commander-in-chief of the Australian Military Forces. Mr. Chifley said the Army was faced with dual problems of demobilisation and reorganisation of post-war lorces. "Post-war matters occupy a considerable time of the Chief of the General Staff, iand to afford him relief it has been decided to appoint a vicechief." he said.
Major-General Rowell is at present Director of Tactical Investigation at War Office. Lieut-General Scurdee is acting commander-i’hief until the reconstruction of the Military Board. Previously he occupied the position Of Chief of the General Staff and has .served as head of the Military Mission in Washington.
