ENCOURAGEMENT OF SURF CLUBS
JT is pleasing to see that the Manawatu County Council has made a monetary grant to the Foxton Surf Club an insurance premium in the interests of 1 mman life. That council’s action is worthy of emulation by others, because surf and life-saving clubs are of immense public value, particularly in the warm season. Much has been done in schools and elsewhere to teach children to swim and become self-confident in the water, but self-confidence in the calm atmosphere of a bath sometimes is far from sufficient to cope with a strong sea, where experience must be added to strength. Then there is a fairly large section of the community which is foolhardy on the beach, and realises too late that a tide rip is something it cannot contend with. 'Wanganui has a live Surf Section of the Royal Life-saving Society, and is deserving of encouragement by all local bodies and the public generally in its watch and activity in the interests of human life.
