REFUGEE FROM JAVA
PLANS TO CARE FOR THEM IN AUCKLAND TRANSIT CAMP BEING MADE (P.A.) Auckland, Dec. 19. Work has begun this week to convert part of the building ,at the R.N.ZA.F. No. 1 Port Depot, in Market Road, Remuera, to receive the first draft, of Dutch families who will arrive in New Zealand next month from internment camps in the Netherlands East Indies. An office has been established in Auckland to deal with organisation of the scheme and the administrative staff selected. Mr. H. F. van Eck, viceconsul of the Netherlands, has been appointed to take charge of the organisation.
Conversion of the buildings at. the Port Depot is being undertaken hy the Works Department. Mr. van Eck stated it was understood that the entire camp would shortly be vacated by Air Force and made available for the needs of the Dutch evacuees. Eight buildings have been taken over already. One of these is being converted into an office and the remainder will be lifted with cubicles and beds 1o form a transit camp. Kitchen facilities are also being installed. Each natch of evacuees will make only a brief stay in the transit camp, during which lime arrangements will he made for them to purchase new clothes. Most of them will have only very ragged clothing left when they reach New Zealand
'llin probable date of arrival of the first draft is not known yet. Each draft will number about 1000 persons, who will be equally divided among the three centres The draft will remain for about four months, and then return to Java. Fresh drafts will arrive in New Zealand every month, for probably 12 months.
