OVATION FOR RAKANUI

WINS BOLTON HANDICAP AT WOODVILLE SPRINT TO RAMICOURT Fine weather after a threatening morning prevailed for the Woodville District Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday,j but a boisterous wind made conditions at times trying. The clash with other racing fixtures affected the club somewhat, the totalisator turnover at £27,236 10s, showing a decrease of £4705 on the £32,041 10s handled at the 1944 meeting, held on December 9 unopposed. The 1943 figures were £29,741 10s. The track was in splendid order and very fast. The principal event, the Bolton Handicap, was won by the topweight Rakanui, who was accorded an ovation on returning to the enclosure. The open, sprint, the Oete Handicap, was I also won by the topweight, Ramicourt, I both events providing interesting fin-< ishes. A feature of the day’s racing, was the success of the hurdle jockey, | W. J. Stevens, who piloted three winners. Gay Rouen paid over a score in the hurdle race and Gay Lena not far short in the Borough Hack. In addition there were some acceptable place returns, only three favourites winning. Nothing appeared anxious to make the early pace in the Bolton Handicap and Rakanui and Theolateral were left in front, being followed into the back by Don Mac. Tavern Light, and Financial, with Dualitv and Betterman bringing up the rear. With the pace clapped on Rakanui and Theolateral still held their positions into the straight, where Don Mac and Financial challenged. In the run to the judge, Rakanui held off Theolateral by half a neck, with Don Mac three-quarters of a length away, third, just in front of Tavern Light. Duality was almost in line with the fourth horse, with Financial next and Betterman last.

Ramicourt confidently ridden, waited on the leaders in the Oete Handicap. run at a smart pace, and then smothered them in the straight. Sir Bradbury, Park Light and Royal Heir made the early running, and Sir Bradbury was accompanied into the coming on the outer. Royal Heir and Park Light. Rink and Ramicourt coming on the outer. Royal Heir headed Sir Bradbury in the last furlong and then Ramicourt ran pas’ them to win a short neck, with Rova] ■ Heir a similar distance in front- 1 of Sir Bradbury. Transmitter was a close | fourth, ahead of Rink. The Nursery Handicap was won by; the Trentham-trained Malanui a bay colt by Broiefort from the unraced Gainscourt mare Starbuck, a halfsister to Donegal Bay and ■ Good Bay. Malanui was bred by Mr. • W. B. Connors at Wangaehu and was: the last yearling in the catalogue last I January, being sold at 160gns. Mala-| nui was always in the picture and held 1 off the well-backed Opulent by hail 1 a head. Daniel Haigh was favourite for the Mangaatua Hurdles but a couple of faulty jumps cost him the major hon- ; ours, which went to a rank outsider in I Gay Rouen, a full-brother to the illfated Valky’s Bov.
