BANDS ON PARADE

DISPLAY IN WANGANUI COMBINED CARNIV AL EFFORT. Six brass bands and three Highland Pipe bands took part in a massed display at Cook's Gardens yesterday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of the public for the largest gathering of bandsmen seen in Wanganui for some time. Visiting bands were present from Palmerston North, Feilding and Hawera, representing a total of nearly 200 bandsmen. Proceeds were in aid of the R.S.A., Nurses and Scottish Society carnival funds. The display was given added interest because of the New Zealand brass bands’ contests which are to be held in Christchurch early next year. Many of the items played by individual bands were well up to contest standard. At the start of the display the six brass "bands combined for the playing of “Nearer My God to Thee.” At the conclusion they marched round the oval playing “Colonel Bogey.” Each band performed individually during the afternoon, the applause given being a tribute to the work of the bandsmen.
