GAS v. ELECTRICITY Sir.—You, no doubt, Mr. Editor, will remember that when the War.ganuiRangitikei Electric Power Board was formed it was necessary, for its success to include a huge area of rural land in the rating area in case of eventualities. Happily there has not been any necessity to call on the rural areas for assistance. They were, however, there in case. The’hulk of the profits of the board have been used to reduce the charge for electricity, and probably, more than half of the rebate has gone to the Wanganui and Marton consumers. In the past the board resolutely set its face against, helping country residents to get. the power unless the prospective user paid for the reticulation and entered into a perpetual guarantee to take a certain amount of power. Now, we find that as the gas propositions in Wanganui a.-.d Marton are in a parlous state, it is suggested that the Power Board, which includes all the rural consumers, should come to the rescue of the Marton and Wanganui ratepayers by fathering the loss on these two undertakings. 'Truly a wonderful proposition for the Wanganui and Marton ratepayers. 1 ne country quotp and the Baak of New Zealand Save nothing on this piuposdion.—l am. etc., A. M. RYAN. Taihape, Nowmbei 23. 1945.
