HOLIDAY STAMPS

EFFORT TO FIND OTHER MEANS FOR FARMERS (P.A.) Parliament Bldgs., Nov. 21 Speaking on lhe Annual Holidays Amendment Bill in the House of Representatives to-night, several Opposition speakers again urged that farmers in the, backblock areas should be offered the’ meanjj of making pay - ment for holidays other than by affixing holiday stamps. Mr. K. J. Holyoake (Opp., Pahiatua' said the law was being broken as often as it was observed in this respect, and the Minister might as well bring the other 50 per cent of the people within the law. He suggested that amounu up to £2 might be payable in cash or that employers might be permitted omake out crossed cheques marked "holiday stamps", which the worker could cash only for stamps. The Minister’s objection was that if workers received small sums they spent them instead of saving the money foi lheir holiday. That was unjust, a reflection on the workers. It rni”h| as ADD Holiday Stamps. Well be suggested that they Would their pay for a year and then have a "glorious drunk". The acting Minister of Labour, Mi. O'Brien, replying, said that changesuch as suggested would defeat the purpose of the Bill, which was to enable people to have money for ia holiday when they took that holiday. He could not see that there was any undue hardship on backblocks people who could buy stamps and keep them on hand. The Bill was passed.
