REQUEST TO LOWER TAXATION

MANUFACTURERS’ MOVE THREAT TO WITHDRAW ALL CO-OPERATION (P.A.) Christchurch, Nov. 21 A recommendation that the Manufacturer. ’ Federation, and all trade groups connected with it, withdraw from all co-operation with the Government and Government departments until satisfactory consideration had been given by the Government to representations for taxation adjustment's, calculated to assist industry to re-ac'apt itself to peace requirements, and to find maximum employment for returned servicemen, was passed at a meeting of the council of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association to-night. The federation had repeatedly pressed for action, said Mr. S. L. Wright, but nothing seemed to have been done. A real achievement for the public good would be attained if the Government diverted attention from the oretical legislation to something of real value to the people. The Prime Minister had said that the present Minister of Finance was the best New Zealand had had. If a Minister was judged ny his procrastination, Mr. Wright said he would agree that Mr. Nash would be an easy winner. When Mr. Wright suggested a recommendation that the federation withdraw co-operation with the Government Mr. A. M. Hollander said the resolution, as it stood, savoured too much of the tactics of the extremist unionist organisations his objection Übing supported by Mr. H. C. Urlwin. * C ’ S - Pcate supported Mr. Wright’s remarks. Manufacturers, he said, woulc play an important part in financing the expenditure which Mr. Nash administered, and unless they could be heard they would have to take measures to protect themselves and the workers.’

Mr. D. V. Wilson said he could only conclude that the Minister was trifling with the Federation, and deliberately evading the issue. To nis mind Mr. Nash had been discour.eous in the extreme.
