LEVIN MEETING

PROSPECTS AT OTAKI The Levin Racing Club will hold its spring meeting at Otaki to-day, the home course being not yet ready for occupation. The track should be in excellent order and with weather pros-| pacts bright the meeting should be a successful one. Betting will be win-and-place. Several New Zealand Cup candidates are engaged in the principal event, the Levin Handicap, which is nowadays run over a mile and a-half in order to provide a better windingup task for Cup candidates. As Battledress who won this ewent a couple of years ago, failed badly in the Waverley Cup he would have to improve considerably to have a chance. Main interest among the Cup contestants will be the displays of the stablemates, Langue d’Or and Broiefield, and Catterick Bridge, who went fair races at Napier Park. Duality’s wins at Waverley and Masterton suggest that he may be elected favourite and good efforts may be expected from Black Plato, Broiefield and Betterman. The McDonald Memorial field is one or two above the safety number but there may be sufficient scratchings to obviate divisions. Some of the contestants will be going on to Riccarton for the Stewards’ Handicap, but a quartet that may be prominent in the betting would include Gigli, Tutere, Foxcatcher and Lord Coronach. The Champion Hack Handicap generally attracts a field of good hacks and to-day’s seventeen acceptors include several that, have shown good staying propensities. Foxella was a winner on this course recently and Tremello scored at Masterton. so his display to-day would give a line on his Derby prospects. Leighon’s Glory and Tifox should also appeal. Divisions will be necessary in the Maiden Race and the Hokio Hack Handicap, so there will be a full day’s racing, starting at 11.40 a.m. Bouton d’Or and Flying Orders will be absentees. The following may be fancied:— Manakau Hurdles—Speed King, Peach King, Gold Money Song. Maiden Race.—First Division: Autoshine, Tula. Second Division. Peter Robinson, Yasda. Weraroa Hack—General Saleve, Black Simon, Don Mac. Levin Handicap.—Duality, Broiefield (or Langue d’Or), Black Plato. Mako Mako Hack.—lron Duke, Black Simon,- The Grand. Champion Hack.—Leighon’s Glory, Tremello. Foxella. McDonald Memorial.—Gigli, Tutere, Lord Coronach. Hokio Hack.—First Division: Molly Martia Master Baron. Second Division: Broderie, White Cap.
