MUST PRODUCE WEALTH AND SERVICES

APPEAL TO N.Z. WORKERS BY HIGH COMMISSIONER

: (P A.) Wellington, Nov. 14. An appeal for a sense of responsibility on the part of workers, and a reminder that legislation would not solve problems facing the country unless they 9lso produced wealth and services, was made by New Zealand's High Commissioner in London, Mr. W. J. Jordan, when he addressed the annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party to-day. Mr. Jordan spoke of the great changes he had noted in the people’s conditions since he came back to New Zealand. When he left for London some years ago he carried away acute memories of the poverty and want that prevailed before lhe 1935 elections. New Zealand was now a new country with everyone in good employment and with many of its worst problems solved, many improvements made and great advances achieved towards a happier social life. Mr. Jordan said many people in Britain who had visited New Zealand had remarked to him upon the achievements in reading, economic progress and social security that were everywhere to be seen.

In appealing for a sense of responsibility among the workers, he reminded them that the first essential was the production of goods and services. Goodwill and Unity were also essential if the better life desired by all was to be achieved. A resolution was passed thanking Mr. Jordan for his speech, expressing the highest confidence in him as High Commissioner, and extending comradely goodwill to him and to Mrs. Jordan in their future work in Great Britain.
