ENGLAND’S RUGBY FIFTEEN

SIDE TO PLAY “KIWIS’

MATCH AT TWICKENHAM NEXT SATURDAY

London, Nov. 15. England’s team to play the New Zealanders at Twickenham on November 24 will be captained by J. Heaton, who first played for his country in 1935 and has six caps to his credit. With H. F. Wheatley (Coventry), a forward who has won seven caps between 1936 and 1939, he is .lie only man in the team who played in the last full international match before the war. The team is as follows:—Full-back, Pateman (Coventry); three-quarters, G. Hollis (Hull), J. Heaton, F. K. Scott (St. Mary’s Hospital), Marriott; half-backs, Hall and P. W. Sykes

(Wasps); forwards, T. Price (Gloucester), W. O. Chadw.ck (Richmond and Blackheath), G. A. Kelly (Bedford), D. B. Vaughan (Harlequins), J. Mycock (Sale), H. F. Wheatley (Coventry), F Bole (Cambridge University), G. Hudson (Gloucester). The team is regarded as largely experimeatal and tentative At this early stage of the season, says “The Times,” nobody would dream of calling it normal. The “Daily Telegraph” says that Lhe team, "if a workman-like combination and in fair condition, should give a good account of itself. None of England's selectors has ever been faced with a more difficult task. There is i o nucleus of last year’s team to build round, as is normally the case. Instead of three trial matches there has been none. Reli-

ance is being placed on players with pre-war experience. Marriott, Hall, Sykes, Price, Kelly, Vaughan and Bote are the only products of wartime Rugby. But on form shown this season it is plain that the so-called ‘old tins’ can more than hold their own wilfc youth. Heaton’s choice as captain will be welcomed. He is not only senior international, but he has the personality to lead the side and is still the finest attacking centre in the game.” The “Daily Mail” remarks that a feature of interest is the pairing of Hall and Sykes at. half-back. Both are 20 years of age, and much will depend upon the success with which they can combine.
