DEATH OF FORMER ALL BLACK
MR. JACK HOGAN, OF WANGANUI One of Wanganui’’s former All Black footballers, Mr. John (Jack) Hogan died at the residence of nis brother, Holyoake Street, Wanganui East, on Thursday. He was aged 64 years, and had been in indifferent health for the past 15 months. Mr. Hogan was born in Wanganui and was educated at the Wanganui Marist Brothers’ School, and from the time he left there he always took n keen interest, in aff forms of sport, particularly Rugby football. For years he was a valued member of the Kaierau Rugby Club and wm a contemporary of many noted representative players, including Alex Takarangi. Alf Guscott, Dr. A. H. E. Wall, Arthur (Humpy) Seeling, Charlie Seeling, Mona Thompson, and Ron McGregor. In 1907 Mr. Hogan won selection in an All Black team which toured Australia under the captaincy of Mr. J. Hunter, of Fordell. This side played seven matches, won five, lost one and drew one. On the formation of the League code In Wanganui Mr. Hogan became a member of the Eastern Club, and in 1913 was selected for the New Zealand League team which toured Australia that year. Amateur athletics claimed this interest as a young man, and in 1906 Mr. Hogan won the Louis Cohen Cup for the best all-round athlete in Wanganui. As an oarsman he rowed for the Aramoho Boating Club, and represented it with success at manv regattas. Mr. Hogan’s wife predeceased him about 20 years ago. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. K. Couchmari, Wanganui”, and two sons, Messru. Denny Hogan. Stratford, and Jim New Plymouth. The funeral took place at the Catholic Cemetery yesterday, following Requiem Mass at St. Mary’s Church.
