MORE STEAM THAN USUAL

RUAPEHU’S ACTIVITY DOES NOT WARRANT RUMOURS

"More steam than usual is being emitted and the rumblings are the loudest I have heard since I came up here,” said Mr. Allen Beck, observer for the Geological Survey, when the "Chronicle” telephoned him at Chateau Tongariro last night to inquire regarding the latest developments at Mount Ruapehu.

Mr. Beck said that the mountain could be clearly seen from the Chateau yesterday afternoon, after having been obscured by cloud for some time. He had not been able to make the ascent for a week. In addition to lhere being more steam than usual, there was, at intervals, a great puff of ash-laden smoke, unaccompanied by an explosion A severe explosion was felt at 8.39 p.m. on Thursday, when Ruapehu gave a good display, accompanied by the usual blast, and hurling red-hot rocks to a height of about 1500 feet. "It was only a normal blast.” said Mr. Beck. “I have seen more spectacular ones than last night's eruption.”

Sensational rumours concerning the mountain were discounted by Mr Beck who said that Ruapehu’s activity had been fairly considerable of late, bnt there had been no fresh developments, and there was no suggestion whatsoever that the Chateau Tongariro was likely to be evacuated.
