WANGANUI TROTTING

BRIGHTER PROSPECTS FOR NEXT YEAR CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING The elates nominated for the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting on Anniversary Day, January 22, next, and the following Saturday, January 26, were the most promising available, said the president, Dr. G. J. Adams, at the annual meeting last night.

He added that the decision to reinstate racing and trotting dates in the Dominion had resulted in a revival of interest in the Wanganui Trotting Club’s activities, with the result that 23 new members had been nominated for election at this meeting.

“With these new' members coming in, and the prospects of trotting next year, the future outlook of the club is good ” Dr. Adams added. The dates originally offered to the club next year were Saturday, January 19, and Anniversary Day, but the executive thought that the Saturday following January 22 would be preferable, said Dr. Adams. Formal application had been made accordingly to the New Zealand Trotting Conference and confirmation was awaited. Dr. Adams was re-elected president, unopposed, as were the three vicepresidents, Messrs. B. R. Dobbs, A. G. Mills, and P. Carmichael. Six nominations were received for four vacancies on the committee, Messrs. C. Aitken and B. M. Leigh (two sitting members) and S. Dustin and F. C. Wilson being elected. The other two nominated were Messrs. H. S. Harman and A, F. Nicholls.

Mr. R. V. Brown was re-electea honorary treasurer, Mr. Rf Robson auditor, and Mr. C. S. Swan secretary. Inquiries are to be made as to the possibility of a win-and-place machine being obtained for the Wanganui meeting. Dr. Adams said that an effort would be made to lift the standard of trotting seen in Wanganui and make the stakes more attractive. “I feel sure, that if we get first-class horses and offer them good stakes we shall get the support of the public” he added. With this object in view the committee was negotiating with the Wellington Trotting Club, which would hold a meeting on February 2, for the purpose of co-ordinating the Wanganui and Wellington programmes. Thl? would result in improved stakes and a tightening of classes. Dr. Adams added that he believed the Wellington Club would be sympathetic when a deputation waited on its representatives in the near future.
