ADVICE ECR IMPROVEMENT IN CONDITIONS (P.A.) Parliament Bldgs., Nov. 14. “I have come to the conclusion thar there is very little chance of the nurses having their conditions improved in the public, private or maternity hospitals of New Zealand under the present local body administration,” said the Hon. Doyle in the Legislative Council to-da.y during the second reading debate on the Social Security Amendment Bi!'. His advice to the nurses was to form a union of some kind they need not call it a union if they do not want to— and go to the Arbitration Court and have conditions defined bv an iaward. His experience had told him the majority of men on hospital hoards were more concerned w’ith keeping taxation down than increasing nurses’ salaries and removing the causes of dissatisfaction. Mr. Doyle also said Ihe time had arrived for the Government to make a searching investigation into the conduct of matfwnitv homes and the fees, levies and charges made in Iho e institutions. He said many mot henwere dissatisfied with having to nav excessive mat emit v home fees which varied considerably.
