WAS OWN SURGEON

Recd. 9. 10 p.m. Adelaide, Nov. 15 While a Filipino boy held a mirror above the wound, an A.I.F. officer at Mindanao (Philippines) removed his own appendix in a three hours’ operation. The truth of this story is vouched for by Brigadier K. R. Wills, M.C., of Adelaide, who has just returned to civil life after serving for the last year of the war as head of the Allied Intelligence Bureau. The officer was Captain Robert McLaren, Scottish born, of Queensland.

Brigadier Wills said that Captain McLaren, a veterinary surgeon in civil life, was attacked by acute appendicitis a year ago at Mindanao. Alone, except for the Filipino boy, he cut his body open without an anaesthetic of any kind. While the boy held the mirror above the wound, Captain McLaren removed his own appendix and sewed up the incision.
