A. AND P. SHOW

Sir,—The fact that round about 20,000 people visited the recent A. and P. Show is incontrovertible evidence that the townsfolk are interested in the farming industry on which so much of our progress depends. It is therefore to be hoped that our farmer friends will, in future shows, display more of their products than was the case last week. As an A. and P. Show the event was a fiasco, and it is a verysevere commentary on the apathy o'f the farming community that so few exhibits were entered in the various cattle and sheep classes. The president of the A. and P. Association rightly stated that A. and P. shows were the shop window of the farming industry, but he must be very disappointed that his fellow farmers failed so dismally to put their goods into the shop window. I have no doubt but that the officers of the A. and P. Association did their best to canvass for entries. Where then does the fault lie? This is a question the executive of the A. and P. Association must seek to solve. Surely the farmers of the Wanganui district are not less interested in their own A. and P. Association than farmers in other districts are. Although I may be thought to be a trifle ungrateful in writing thus, I want to say that I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the show and I congratulate the committee on their splendid financial success. My only endeavour is to do something to dispel the apathy of the farmers of the district, who I am quite certain have exhibits equal to any district in the Dominion. Wanganui can have a high-class A. and P. Show if the farmers play their part. The city folk have shown how willing they are to do theirs.—l am, etc., “CITIZEN." W’anganui. Nov. 15, 1945.
