GAOL FOR BOOKMAKER

NOT DETERRED BY FINES (P.A.) Auckland, Nov. 12. Found guilty of carrying on the business of a bookmaker, George Ransfield Mau, age< 42, and Herbert William Briggs, ag-\7 27, appeared before Mr. Justice Callan for sentence. Mau was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour and Briggs was fined £2OO, in default one month’s imprisonment. In sentencing the prisoners His Honour said he was satisfied it was the duty of the Court to impose a term of imprisonment on Mau who, between 1929 and 1941, had been fined sums totalling £855. None of these experiences seemed to have stopped him and he was now found with some connection with a large and wellorganised bookmaking business.
