NIGHT DISPLAY ON COOK’S GARDENS
combined carnival effort Marching by massed womens teams of the Wanganui Marching Association was a major attraction last night at Cook's Gardens when a display was given in aid of the Combined Carnival funds. The gaily-coloured costumes and the high standard of marching won deserved applause. Teams taking part were: Fusiliers, D.1.C.. United. Troubadas, Victory, Childrens’ Garments, McGruer’s, and Ambassadors. In conjunction with the marching, lhe Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held a further series of events in their twilight programme. H. Brewer, off 6 yds, won the final of the 75 yards handicap and Brewer off 16 yards, was also successful in winning the final of the 220 yards with. N. Anderson off 14 yards, run-ner-up. The 1000 yards handicap went to Les Head, who had a handicap of 28 yards. He ran a well-judged race. In the cycling events F. Clinton revealed good form. He and K. Dunlop staged a thrilling finish in the final of the quarter mile event, both dead-heating on the tape. A Higgs won the two-mile handicap off 130 yards.
