NOT RISING WELL

TROUT TO THE FLY disappointing results. Rotorua, Nov. 12. With the exception ot of Lakes Rotoehu and Rotoma, where several fair to good bags have been reported, fly fishing conditions in the Rotorua disrict have continued to be ditlicult, and results have been disappointing. Late yesterday afternoon tne wind, which had been persistently from a westerly quarter for nearly a fortnight, swung to the north, and if this continues some areas which have been completely unfishable since the opening of the season mav produce results. So far there has been little sign of green beetle ■on the waler, and in both Rotoiti and Rotorua inanga and smelt do not appear to be inshore. Fly fishing from the flats off the mouths of the Ngongotaha and Waited Streams has been difficult, and very few fish have been landed. The majority of fish taken in this area since the opening of the season have been late spawning fish still in the streams. Anglers generally report that the fish in both Rotorua and Rotoiti, even on the sheltered lee shores, have not been rising well. Trolling parties in deeper water have done little better than the fly fishermen, but. they too have found conditions difficult.

One of the best bags so far reported this season was taken at Rotoehu on Saturday, when a Rotorua angler caught eight very well-conditioned fish, averaging 41b. and including one fish of sSlb. Earlier in the season Mr. W. Gomez and two other rods took 29 fish from this lake, inc’uding ono fish of 81b. The majority of these fish were taken on the fly.

Some good rises have been reported from Lake Rotoma, and fish up to 71b. in weight were caught there during the opening days of the season. One party from Waimana reported two very' satisfactory days on this lake. Lake Tarawera has fallen into disfavour in recent seasons as the result of the d fficulty experienced in catching the big fish which the lake is known to contain. However, during the opening days of the season several fish were taken in the vicinity of the outlet, the heaviest so far reported weighirg 101 b.

ROTOITI MOST DISAPPOINTING. Lake Rerewhakaitu has not been very much fished. The best bag reported from this lake is one of eight taken on the fly. Other anglers fishing in this lake report that the fish are in good condition, but d.llicult to take on the fly. Rotoiti has been the most disappointing of lakes. The majority of the fish taken by fi> fishermen have been inshore feeders and there has been little sign of deep water fish. Dr. Annett and another rod, fishing on the flats near the channel outlet, took five on one afternoon and five on another, but othei anglers fishing in this area have not averaged better than two or three fish a day. Despite favourable conditions on the lee shores, Sulphur Bay fishing has been disappointing. A few fish have been taken in this vicinity in the early mornings, but they have not been in good condition. Ohau Channel has been discoloured as the result of heavy winds, and very few fish have been taken from it since the opening of the season. Fishing at Waikaremoana was poor on the open mg days of the season owing to bad weather. This improved later, however, and Messrs. J. Williamson (Gisborne) and Malcolm McLeod (Wairoa) were able to take well-conditioned fish. At Tokaanu and Turangi a large number of anglers found the Tongariro River in flood and very discoloured. Consentient ly fishing was poor. Success varied in the bays of Lake Taupo. Of 33 fish taken at Motuopa one was of 91b. Forty-one trout were taken at Motutore Point, but. their condition was not good. Eleven landed at the mouth of the Tauranga were in better condit’fcn and so were those taken at Waihi Bay. A partv of throe 1 roll ng off Kuratau took 20 fish, all of which were in fair condition.
