FLOOD DAMAGE
EXTENSIVE SLIPS IN WAITOTARA COUNTY "During the war period the county roads did not suffer greatly as the result of storm damage, for which the council may be considered fortunate," stated a report by Mr. T. Dix, engineer-clerk, tabled at the monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council yesterday. “The past month, however, was boisterous and much flood damage has occurred," adds the report, “many roads being closed to traffic for several days because of slips. “In the Waitotara riding several large slips were located on the Paparangi Hill, and Rangitatau East Watershed Highway. These were cleared by a hired angle-dozer. Slips on the Waitotara Valley Highway, and the upper end of the Rangitatau West Road were also blocked, but have now been cleared. There is much to be dope before the last-
mentioned road is restored to its former condition adds the report. The metal has been destroyed where the angle-dozer has been used, because the shell-rock surface will not stand up to the hard usage of this machine.
“In the Tokomaru Riding there were three large underslips on the Rangitatau East Watershed Highway that necessitated the roadway being widened. Slips were cleared along the Kauarapaoa, Ahu Ahu, and Watershed roads. There are several large under-slips on the last-men-tioned road, that have left the roadway too narrow for wheel traffic. An application has been made for a Public Works grant, to restore the flood damage,” stated the report. Cr. W. Morrison presided over Crs. R. Farley, W. G. Handley, G. Crafar, W. McKee, A. R. Bilinghurst, G. H. Trott, H. Titter.
