CARE AT INTERSECTIONS

MAGISTRATE STRESSES DUTY OF MOTORISTS “I know these intersections well but the worse the visibility, the greater the necessity for care," said Ml. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wanganui, yester. day, imposing a fine of £2, with costs 12s, on Margaret Mary Campion, charged with a breach of the righthand rule. The magistrate added that in cases such as this a motorist should practically slop and approach the intersection at slow speed, at the •same time looking in both directions. Defendant pleaded guilty through her counsel, Mr. W. Thrush. Senior-Sergeant F. Culloty told the Court that at 1.15 p.m. on October 17 was driving her car in the direction of the city along Guyton Street. v,hen she failed to give way to a car which was approaching her on the rignt from Bell Street. A collission recurred, but nobody was injured. "Thi s is a bad intersection.” the senior-sergeant added. Mr. Thrush said the visibility at this intersection was obscured by a shop on the corner, and the road was* on an incline. When defendant saw the car she swerved to the left, but the other driver did not see har and a coifission occurred. Little damage was done to the cars.

Howard Jesse Watts was also charged with a breach of tne righthand rule, arising out of a collision with a car driven by Mrs. Ivy May Pickford at the intersection of Godwin Cresent and Purnell Street on October 3. Defendant, for whom Mr. J. S. D. Tizard appeared, pleaded not guilty. After hearing evidence the magistral said that this was simply a case, of a breach of the right-hand rule. Mrs. Pickford had reached the cent raj line of the intersection. Defendant} made a cursory glance to his right, 1 ’ after which his attention was distracted by some boys crossing the road. He failed to look to his right again.

Convicting Watts, the magistrate imposed a tine of £2, with costs 10s
