DAIRY PRODUCTION
DECLINE IN THE WAIKATO Dairy production figures in the Waikato this season are far below the figures for the corresponding period last year, when the spring was described as bountiful. The unusual amount of cold, wet weainer which has been experienced recently has delayed the growth of the ’ pasture. There has been a noticeable improvement during the past few weeks, but the feed position is still far from as satisfactory as it was last vear. The shortage of feed is reflected in the saleyards, where there has been a diminution of interest in store stock. Fat lambs are not making the headway expected of them, and smaller yardings of beef cattle have resulted from the feed shortage. Some farmers have commenced ensilage making, but because a number were not able to close pastures to cattle as early as usual the busiest period will not occur for a month or two.
