APPEAL BY SOEKARNO

LETTERS TO TRUMAN AND ATTLEE MESSAGE TO UNITED NATIONS Recd. 10.30 p.m. Batavia, Nov. 9. Dr. Soekarno, leader of the selfstyled Nationalist regime in Java, has appealed to Persident Truman and Mr. Attlee to intercede in Java and prevent savage warfare. He pointed out, in a letter to Mr. Truman, that Asiatic goodwill toward America has been endangered by the fact- that the Dutch continue to wear American uniforms and drive American trucks.

Dr. Soekarno added that American interests are now involved in the struggle. “Please use your good offices to disarm and evacuate all male Dutch citizens of military age,” he wrote.

Dr. Soekarnn told Mr. Attlee that the presence of British troons in Java was harmful to the goodwill and understanding between the British and Indonesian peoples. Dr. Soekarno has sent a message to the United Nations Security Council:

“The Dutch troops in ’lndonesia directly caused the death of Indonesians. We request +he Security Council to remove all Dutch forces from Indonesia, including arms and equipment. so that the British forces may peacefully complete the mission of disarming and evacuationg the Japanese. We resnectfullv point out that the Chinese army in North China excluded French troops and completely disarmed th? and restored neac«. We urge a similar nrogramme for Indonesia pending a United Nations’ decision on the Justice of the Indonesian Haim for independence "ndor the Atlantic Charter, which the Dutch oppose.”
