He declared that the Americans had been involved m only minor skirmishe . He added that his mission was sole,y to help the Central Government repatriate Japanese troops. He*poin - ed out that there were 1,8000,000 Japanese in China, 40 per cent, of them still armed, he emphasised that the Americans will no become involved in fanatical warfare and will not take aggre sive action against the Chinese, except to protect American lives and property. Chinese Nationalise in Tientsin expect an eventual attack by 40,000 Communists, who are reported to be concentrating 35 to 60 miles southward.
