MARTON NOTES

ST. ANDREW’S MEN’S CLUB GUEST EVENING There was a very large attendance at Wednesday night’s meeting of the St. Andrew’s Men's Club. It was a "Guest Evening." The president, W. R. Dukeson, extended a hearty welcome, and said he was pleased to see so many present, especially the lady friends and wives of members.

Musical Lems were given by Messrs R. C. Ball, and G. Hunter (songs); W. A. Seymour (recitations), and conjuring items by Private Neilson, who has just returned from overseas service after being a prisoner of war for years in Germany. These item., were greatly enjoyed by all, and put the older members in memory of the great "Dante."

Community singing was led by Mr. J, Gibson and was greatly enjoyed. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the entertainers.

Mrs. R. C. Ball accompanied the singing items.

Mr. R. Dukeson gave an interesting talk on the history of the "Bearded Irises,” and explained the great development and growth of this type of flower, and also the treatment it required. Mi. P. H. Hall gave a vivid, interesting, and instructive talk on the "Islands and Peoples of the Pacific.” This talk was a gem. Mr. Hall had spent over 18 years amongst the natives, visiting the various islands, and watching the natives at their work, play, and fishing. As it was all observations, the address was indeed very interesting and the speaker was heartily applauded at its conclusion. Mr. F. L. Nicol proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. R. Dukeson and Mr. P. H. Hall for their very fine addresses. A mo.ion of sympathy to Mr. D. Thomson and family in thei- recent sad bereavement was carried, members standing in silence. Several apologies for non-attend-ance were received. Mrs. J. Gib-On, on behalf of the ladies present, thanked the men for their Invitation io be nresent. sne said they had enjoyed evening very much, also the sunoer that was in charge of the. men folk “only," she said, "that the wives would be making the men do more at home in getting supper ready, as they were not bad at it.” Mr. Dukeson, replying, said it had been a pleasure to have the ladies present. The Scripture reading was given by Mr. Gabites and the Benediction was p-onounced by the Rev. Cyril Robinson. A delicious supper was dispensed by members. At the next club night, December 5, the speaker wil) be Mr. S. A. R. Mair, his subject being "Early History of Now Zealand, more especially North Auckland.” Also it is expected that the Palmerston North Men's Club will be the guests of the evening.
