GREAT MORAL DEBT
i DUE TO BRITAIN FOR HER EARLY SACRIFICES “WE WILL PAY OUR WAY," SAYS DR. DALTON. Recd. 8 p.m. London, Sept. 22. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Dr. Hugh Dalton, in a speech at Sheffield, said there was a great moral debt owing to Britain, who. for the sake of the world, stood alone and unafraid through the dark early days of the war.
“We desire to co-operate to the full with the rest ot the United Nations, but it must be co-operation on fair and equal terms,” he said. “We face great difficulties, but we are the sort ot people who overcome them. We face the future with our heads high. ‘‘We shall pay our way. It is out plain duty to increase exports as rapidly as possible to all markets open to us throughout the world. We must save dollars, which means we must cut down, without delay, all imports requiring dollar expenditure, unless they are absolutely vital. The Government already has taken a step to this end.”
