FOXTON FIXTURE AT AWAPUNI

PROGRAMME AND PROSPECTS Inability to replace the grandstand, destroyed by fire some time ago, has resulted in the Foxton Racing Club being compelled to stage its meetings at the Awapuni course, and that set down for to-day should again serve to show that the occurrence was something in the nature of a blessing in disguise. Twelve months ago the totalisator turnover at ’.his fixture was £41,186, and recent increases would suggest that the total to-day, given fine weather, should be nearly JO per cent, better. The track promises to be in good order, and backers will have the benefit of form at the .Wanganui meeting to guide them in the tricky spring problems.

Of main interest will be the Foxton Cup, for which there were seventeen acceptors, and as was the case last year, when Langue d’Or won from Indian Sport and Flahuluk, an interesting race should be provided. The topweight, Flying Tor, winner of the Manawatu Winter Cup and the Parliamentary Handicap, is expected to be favourite. Broieiield can be expected to run a great race, and Keen Play would only have to improve a little on his Wanganui form to be hard to beat. Lord Darnley, Flahuluk, Duality, Dunbar and Ganges will have supporters, and Hulabaloo is to make another effort in open company.

Seven furlongs is the distance set down for the sprinters, headed by Typhoon, who is down to leave on Monday for an Australian campaign. At 9.3 Typhoon is well placed for he carried a 141 b penalty and then won the North Island Challenge Stakes last march. The public will have to risk his requiring a race after a lengthy spell. Financial, Kaitoa (last year's winner), Theolateral, Saludos, Duplicity, and Master Ted appear to comprise the “possibles” division, and the strongest opposition to Typhoon should come from the half-dozen named.

Form among the hacks is rather mixed but Don Mac, Stony Broke, and Lord Coronach were all winners at Wanganui and in their respective races they sholud be hard to beat again. The field for the Trial Stakes was divided to provide two separate events, the second and third on the programme, which will start at 12 noon. The following may appeal:— Faiaki Hurdles.—Bettermusk, Spiro, Peach King. Ist Trial Stakes.—Second Seal, Battle Lord, Calm Courage. 2nd Trial Stakes.—Black Watei, Susan Lee, Magic Art. Foxton Cup.—Flying Tor, Keen Play, Duality. Motuiti Hack.—Don Mac, Young Trent, Battle Dance. Awahou Hack.—Stony Broke, Solver, Patu-Ra. Robinson Handicap.—Typhoon, Kaitoa, Master Ted.
