TWO SENTENCES TO STAND
COURT’S RULING ON APPEALS
(P A.) Wellington, Sept. 29. The Court of Appeal yesterday heard appeals by three persons, who
ha:t neon sentenced at Auckland, against the severity of their sentences. The Court, comprised the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, Mi’. Justice Johnston, Mr. Justice Fair and Mr. Justice Northcroft. Wilbon Hesketh, tobacconist, aged 61, sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour, by Mr. Justice Callan on two charges of receiving stolen goods, applied for a reduction of his sentence. Mr. R. E‘. Pope, for the accused, said the charges concerned the receiving of four cases of American cigarettes, valued at £5O, and four cases of American to!, . co, valued at £3O. Accused told the detectives lie had nought the cigarettes at £l2 10s a case. Alter his sentence he had been lined £25 lor a Customs breach. The Court directed Riat the sentence should stand. Mr. W. J. Stacey appeared for Philip Huyvice, compa*i> manager, aged 46, who had been jentcnced to six months' imprisonnier;' with hard labour, for failing to stop after a motor accident, failing to ascertain whether a man lit* had hit was injured, and failing to render practical assistance .■•.
