RETURNED SERVICEMEN'S COLUMN

f (By “Mark 1”) t

FURNITURE LOAN AND INCOME TAX From a question asked at the last quarterly meeting it is apparent that some members a e under the impression that the £lOO loan they may have obtained from the Rehabilitation Department for the purchase of furniture is subject to income tax. It is realised that there is some justification for their qualms since a very authorative source made a statement to this effect. Nevertheless members may be assured that that loan or any other loan is not income for income tax purposes. ELECTRIC POWER

The executive have been concerned for some time past over the number of cases referred to it relating t.o members setting up in business locally (mos.ly through rehabilitation) but the supply of electric power to their plant has been denied to them unless they are fortunate enough to rent premises with wiring and points etc. already ins ailed just as they require them. The cases brought to the committee’s notice refer to motor engineers (2), wire matress factory, furniture factory, motor car laundry and electro-pla.cr. As a result the following resolution was passed on to headquarters: “That headquarters take up with the Minister of Public Works the question of the removal of restrictions in regard to the supply of electric power to. returned servicemen desiring to enter business on their own account. As the restrictions were originally applied to help industries to carry out essential work in connection with the prosecution of the war and the pressing need for this has now ceased it is considered that the restrictions should be relaxed a least as fa- as the power required for the rehabilitation of ex-servicemen is concerned even if it means the rationing of the power available to industries previously doing war work and now engaged in civilian work.”

Tf the situa'ion were not so serious some of the cases under conside-ation would be pathetically humorous, but space cannot be granted here to detail them. The point is rather what has been done to cope with the position? A deputation of two. one being a returned serviceman acting on behalf, of the Chamber of Commerce, has waited unon the Wanganui-Rangi-tikei Electr'c Powe- Board and renues'ed that body to meet the reasonable demands of returned men. REHABILITATION BOARD

At the meeting this week the Wanganui City Council supported the suggestion made by the R.S.A. that a hoard be established in this city. The City Council, is prepared to endorse any application the Association may initiate to the proper government author? y. SNOOKER MATCH

On Monday last quite a number of spectators visited the bililard room to view the match between Mr. M. B. Hooker’s team and the R.S.A. rep.esenta.ives. Sonje very fine play was seen and much appreciated by all the “cuisls" present. Particluar reference must be made to the artistry of Henricks one of the visito.s who demonstrated mos marked ability with the cue. Incidentally this player has a break of 132 to his account. The result of the match was a draw of 6 games each, with the R.S.A. scoring in the aggregate 580 poin.s against 531. The occasion provided a most pleasant evening and will do much to inc-ease the interest of members in the billiard room and to increase the standard of play. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB The final night for the season .■eld on last Tuesday was a very sue . ssful function. The president, Mr. C. S. Smith before a laige number of members presented .rophies to the winners announced previously and to these may be added the name of Mr. R. C. D.
