LICENSEE GIVING UP

MATERNITY HOSPITAL IN MARTON Advice from ths district medical officer of health, Dr. T. C. Louie (Palmerston North) that the licensee of Hazebrouck Maternity Hospital, Marton, wished to relinquish I lie home as from November 30 next was received by the Wanganui Hospital Board al its monthly meet.ng yesterday. Dr. Lonie said the licensee, Miss M. Flower wished to give up for health reasons, which were justified. She had given excellent service -..ver a period of years. The hosplta. was in good condition and it was suggested that the board take over the institution till its new hospital in Marton was ready for occupation. The secretary, Mr. K. Harris, said he had asked Dr. Lonie if any alterations were necessary to the hospital in the event of the board taking it over. He had described these as infinitesimal.

Mr. N. Hughes (Maxwell). What does he actually mean by that? An expenditure of £2000? Mr. Harris said the alterations were so small that the department would not insist on the mbeing carried out. Mr. Harris also reported to the board that Miss Flower was prepared to carry on tor a short time, but not for 12 months. The difficulty may be overcome if the board was prepared to offer a subsidy to anybody taking the premises over. Replying to a question, Mr. Harris said the board could purchase the property for about £4OOO. The building had accommodation for six to eight patients, and staff quarters were also available. Mr. J. H. Wells: Will the new Marton Hospital be ready in 12 months? The Chairman, Mr. D. D. Simpson (hunterville): It won’t be ready in that time. The question of providing maternity accommodation in Marton is being consiaeied by the board.
