SERVICES RUGBY

NORTH ISLAND BEATS THE SOUTH (P.A.) Wellington, Sept. 9. A crowd of between 10,000 and 11,000 was at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon when the North Island Services beat the South Island by 14 points to 3. The gate takings were £BOO. The weather was fine and the ground dry, with conditions ideal for last, open play. The display was disappointing through the faulty handling by 7 the backs of both sines. With a helpful northerly breeze the South Island had the advantage territorially in the first spell, but all attempts by the backs to break through’ failed, principally through Jones and Ingram, the live-eighths, attempting to cut through too fast. Johnston, the North Island hooker, gave Goldstone a liberal supply of the ball, but all attempts by the backs to score was met by solid tackling. King, the South Island centre three-quarter, revealed the form he had shown at Auckland in the inter-island match, and made some fine dashes, but marred these more than once by faulty transfers. Scrummaging by both sets of forwards was slovenly, the ball having to be put in two and three times. On the other hand, some effective lineout work was seen, Fitzgerald, Shannon and Landstrom showing up Lot the South, and Elliott, O'Donnell ami Eryers for the North. The only score in the first spell was a penalty goal by Fitzgerald for the South. With the breeze behind them, the North Island 15 dominated the

second spell, securing the ball almost at will from the scrums. The North Island owed its victory to the definitely superior play by their rearguard. Goldstone sent out long dive passes smartly, which were cleverly gathered in by Barchard, the first five-eighths, who collaborated well with Colquhoun and Deas. Pearson the right wing three-quarter, however, was the outstanding back on inc side, being dangerous every time he secured possession. Wishnowsky gave his usual sound display at full-back. On the Southern side King (centre three-quarter), Ingram (second live eighths) and Harvey (hall-back), w’.i.) led the team, all showed up well and McHugh did sound work as the last line of defence. (P.A.) New Plymouth, Sept. 9. Played at New Plymouth for the first time in thirty-three years, the representative Rugby game between Wellington and Taranaki on Saturday was won by Wellington by 13 points to 9. Wellington's strengtn lay in its ability to hook th 3 bait from set scrums and in i.he speed of lhe backs, served magnificently by Tindill. Wellington took command of the play fre/n the outset, but Taranaki lorwaras were dangerous in loose rushes latei in the spell and early in the second spell. The Wellington dece.'ce however, was sound, ana the backs carried too many guns. For Wellington Burns, Morrison and Wickham scored tries, and Morrison kicked a held goal. For Tarnaaki Whitham scored a try and Cronin kicked two penalty goals. SOUTHLAND” BEA'iEN BY OTAGO
