CHELMSFORD STAKtS WIN Recd. 7.30 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 9. Sleepy fox made his record two wins from two starts in Sydney when he won the Chelms.ord Stakes at Randwick yesterday. He is the thirteenth New Zealand winner of tne race in the last 20 years. Sleepy Pox won so impressively that he must be rated a tirst-ciass Epsom prospect despite his big weight of 9.11, but after the race Mr. O. iriggs, who represents Sleepy Fox s New Zealanr owners and trainer B. Pay ten said they favoured a weight-for-age programme for the gelding in preference to, the Epsom. The owners, the Hon. E. R. Davis and Mr. Oliver Nicholson, in a .etter received yesterday, indicated that they would like Sleepy Fox lo start in tne Epsom. Turf writers criticise jockey De. Laney for his handling of Magnificent in yesterday’s Chelmsford Stakes, but agree that Sleepy Fox would have won
in any circumstances. The "Sun's turf editor says: "Sleepy Fox is one of the smartest horses to have come from New Zealand in twenty years. He ranks with Limerick, Night march, Ammon Ra find Silver Ring up to a middle distance.” The "Sunday Telegraph” says:— “Sleepy Fox won like a champion. He ’quickly raced mto second place behind Mayfowl and followed h m lo the home turn. Then we went away to a clear lead and had the race won at the Legcr. Without being pushed right out, he registered good time. The false rail is in use at Randwick, .and allowing for 27 1-3 yards’ extra distance the time was equal to 1.50-4, which is only three-quarters of a second outside the traHc record.” Shannon, pre-post favourite for the Epsom, registered a fine win in the Tramway Handicap.
