“FLAT-TOP” AT AUCKLAND
(P.A.) Auckland, Sept. 7. The first “flat topped” ship to Auckland arrived in harbour late this afternoon from Brisbane, and is expected to leave to-morrow lor Sxdney. She cs the Empire Lagan, a BlueFunnel Line ship converted during the war for use as an auxiliary air-craft-carrier. She brought a number of Naval Air Arm personnel who hate been on service with the British Pacific Fleet. The Empire Lagan is one of rnanx merchantmen converted lo carr\- a few aircraft for the purpose of helping to defend convoys against submarine and aerial attack. A number of escort, and auxiliarv carriers are attached to the British Pacific Fleet, but they have been used almost exclusively for ferrying aircraft to bases and to Hie fleet at sea.
