FIRST TO LAND IN SINGAPORE
A WELLINGTON PILOT HE ( AKRIED GOOD NEWS Recd. 11 p.m. Singapore, Sept. 6 The first New Zealander to go into Singapore at. Japan's collapse was Flight-Lieutenant Cliff Andrews, of Wellington, who made a forced landing in a Mosquito on Kalland airfield six days ago. The Japanese met him and transported him, with his navigator, to Changi prison camp, where 12,000 prisoners o( war have since been found. Wild with excitement New Zealanders and Australians mobbed Flight-Lieutenant Andrews, begging lor home news. He spent the night in the camp and lalked almost al! night. Next, morning he was inundated with thousands of Idlers for porting to prisoneis and families, but the Japanese refused To nermit. this. Promising help would arrive within a few days Andows repaired his aircraft and flew back lo Cocos Island.
